Do Ghosts Exist?

The existence of ghosts is an intriguing question when it comes to Christianity as the Bible does not directly deny or affirm the concept. Some will use Hebrews 9:27 to attack the idea of ghosts, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment," (Hebrews 9:27 KJV). We die once, and then the judgment. This verse does not seem to allow a middle ground for ghosts or other exceptions so it is hard to claim there are ghosts.

In the Gospel of Matthew, the disciples say something interesting, "And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit(or ghost); and they cried out for fear," (Matthew 14:26 KJV). This was not a Ghost; rather, it was Jesus walking on the water, "But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid," (Matthew 14:27 KJV). Jesus was not even dead at this point for the crucifixion occurred in Matthew 27. The disciples saw someone walking on the water and assumed it was a ghost, but this does not mean they actually exist. It is possible the disciples were merely being superstitious at this moment as it was dark and they saw a man who they thought was floating.
