Do we Only Have to Follow The 10 Commandments?
Do we Only Have to Follow The 10 Commandments?
One new claim that is occasionally said is that we only have to follow the 10 commandments. This is a rather worrying claim for it denies what Jesus had said on several occasions.
Jesus firstly notes we must love thy neighbor: "Jesus said unto him, Thou(or you) shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy(or your) heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou(or you) shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," (Matthew 22:37-39 KJV). Jesus notes the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor meaning we ought to do it.
Another example is forgiveness: "For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses," (Matthew 6:14-15 KJV). Jesus tells us that if we desire forgiveness, we must first forgive others, another command that is not a part of the 10 commandments but is required.
Paul also confirms this fact: "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God," (Galatians 5:19-21 KJV). Paul notes that if a person is doing these sins, they will not be saved(Galatians 5:21). A person must repent of their sins(1 Thessalonians 5:22), follow God(John 15:14), and believe in him(John 3:16) if they desire salvation.
To finish off this article, let us read the largest evidence: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness," (2 Timothy 3:16 KJV). All scripture is of use, so by saying we do not have to listen to anything other than the commandments, we contradict Paul.
