Does "Amen" Come From "Amun"?
Does "Amen" Come From "Amun"?
According to some, "Amen" is derived from the name of Amun, the king of the Egyptian pantheon, and should not be used.
What Does "Amen" Mean?
The word "Amen" or "אָמֵ֗ן" means "let it be so".
Should We Say "Amen"?
This belief has many flaws, the first of which is that we see the word "Amen" used repeatedly in the Bible. We are even encourged to use the word: "Cursed is the man who makes an idol or a molten image, an abomination to the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’" (Deuteronomy 27:15 NASB1995). We also see it in Psalm 106:48, 1 Chronicles 16:36, Nehemiah 5:13, 2 Corinthians 1:20, Revelations 22:20, and Revelations 22:21.
The Words Amen and Amun:
Scholars such as Dr. David A. Falk note this parrel is nonexistent, as he states: "The two words(i.e. Amun and Amen) are not in any way related". These words do look and sound to some extent similar, but we have no evidence one came from the other. This seems to merely be coincidental.
