Should The Divorced Marry?

Should The Divorced Marry?

As it is well known, God severely despises when one divorces. As the prophet Malachi writes: "For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with wrong,” says the Lord of hosts. “So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously," (Malachi 2:16 NASB1995).

Yet, divorce does happen at times. Sometimes it is even justified: "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery," (Matthew 19:9 NASB1995). After one becomes divorced, what happens then? Must the person stay as a celibate at this point? Well, Paul gives us an answer. "But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband (but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not divorce his wife," (1 Corinthians 7:10-11 NASB1995).

You should not divorce as the general rule, but if you do, one should remain unmarried or rejoin with their ex-spouse.
