Was Enoch The 6th or 7th From Adam?
In Genesis 5:3-18, Luke 3:37-38, and 1 Chronicles 1:1-3, Enoch is said to be the 6th son from Adam; however, in Jude 1:14, it states that he was the seventh son from Adam. The most likely explanation here is a difference in culture. In ancient, Hebraic culture, a "son" or "בֵּן" accompanied a large group of people. The term translates to "descendant", not just a son (Benner 78; Crossway 2451). We find this usage in other places such as when it comes to the sons of Benjamin in Numbers 26.
Enoch may have been specified as the seventh as to serve a theological purpose (Cambridge; Crossway 2451), likely "to mark his importance by ... the sacred number seven" (Meyer).
