What Does it Mean to Use God's Name in Vain?
A common worry is a person used the Lord's name in vain. In fact, many have rather strange theories on what this even means to do, but what is it actually? According to the scholar Dr. David A. Falk: "It isn't just using the Lord's name as a cuss word, and in fact, that's sorta the minor offense here, okay? Let me explain what the second commandment actually means. It means taking it on lightly ... I am a follower of the Lord, but yet I am behaving in a way that is not flattering."
Leviticus seems to confirm this interpretation: "You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. You shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the Lord," (Leviticus 19:11-12 NASB1995). These verses tell us that swearing falsely with the Lord's name is too using God's name vainly. Swearing falsely implies failing to follow a covenant. This makes the Lord look bad as one is doing it with him a part of it.
