What is Soul Sleeping? Is It Real?

Soul sleeping is a Jehovah's Witness belief that states that when you die, you go into a coma-like state until the judgment day. It being a Jehovah's Witness belief, it should already make you skeptical if it has any validity(Jehovah's Witness read a special Bible that removes verses and changes them to fit a narrative that Jesus isn't God). 

The book of Hebrews debunks this idea of soul sleeping. "And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). This verse leaves no time for soul sleeping and if soul sleeping did exist, why wouldn't it have been mentioned here? Wouldn't they want to solidify the idea of soul sleeping if it did indeed exist? 

The idea of soul sleeping comes from the book of Luke. In the book when someone dies, Jesus says the person is merely sleeping instead of stating the person died, yet this is just a kind way to say the person has passed.
