Does Romans 14:11 Prove Universalism?
In the book of Romans it is written: "For it is written [in Isaiah 45:23], “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall give praise to God," (Romans 14:11 NASB1995). Some use this passage to prove Universalism (the belief that all will be saved) as the passage states that "every knee shall bow"; however, this perspective misunderstands the passage.
The context of the passage is Paul noting that people should not be judging over foolish topics such as "... passing judgment on his opinions," (Romans 14:1c).
"But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God," (Romans 14:10 NASB1995).
"The original reference was not to "all men," but only to those who should be saved; Isaiah 45:17, Isaiah 45:21-22, Isaiah 45:24. In this sense the apostle uses it; not as denoting that "all men" should confess to God, but that all "Christians," whether Jewish or Gentile converts, should alike give account to Him. "They" should all bow before their common God, and acknowledge "his" dominion over them," (Barnes).
This passage may also be merely expressing hyperbole.
