How Bad Was Crucifixion? What Is Crucifixion?
First of all, crucifixion was extremely slow. For the ones who had luck on their side, the punishment would only take about three hours until the victim dies. However, many actually managed to survive three whole days without dying!
On average, crucifixion was done in public areas. They did this to put fear in the people, to make them know that if they mess with them, they could receive the same. Sometimes, they even made the victim naked to make the person humiliated.
Crucifixion is actually called one of the worst punishments of the time; as the victim stays on the cross, the person's own weight pushes them down, but the cross keeps the person up. This would make it extremely hard to breathe, trying would create large amounts of pain, but since breathing is necessary, the victim has no other choice.
There are also many types of crucifixion. Crux Decussata, also called Saint Andrew's cross, was a type of cross that was shaped like an "X". Another variety was the Tau cross, a cross that appears like a "T".
