Information on the 7 Deadly Sins

What Are The Seven Deadly Sins?

The 7 deadly sins is a concept that comes from Roman Catholicism. The idea is that by committing one of the 7 sins —  pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth — they inspire other sins.

Greed

Verses That Speak About Greed:

"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs" (1 Timothy 6:10).

"A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the Lord will be enriched" (Proverbs 28:25).

"But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction" (1 Timothy 6:9).

What is Greed?

Greed is a selfish desire. Consisting of things like food, wealth, fame, etc.

Envy

Verses That Speak About Envy:

"A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot" (Proverbs 14:30).

" Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another" (Galatians 5:26).

What is Envy?

Envy is a desire for possessions or achievements that someone else might have. Instead of actually working for it, they simply stay jealous or envious of them.

The famous philosopher Aristotle said this about envy, "a pain at the sight of another's good fortune, stirred by those who have what we ought to have."

Sloth

Verses That Speak About Sloth:

"The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied," (Proverbs 13:4).

"The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor," (Proverbs 12:24).

What is Sloth?

The original word for sloth in the bible is "ἀκηδία."

meaning absence.

κηδία meaning care.

Together this would mean an absence of care.

Gluttony

Verses That Speak About Gluttony:

"Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things" (Philippians 3:19).

"If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it" (Proverbs 25:16).

What is Gluttony?

In short terms, greedily overeating. Some people also consider getting drunk gluttony since the person is overdrinking eventually getting drunk. Since getting drunk is a sin, this would be possible.

Lust

Verses That Speak About Lust:

"But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28).

"but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." (James 1:14-15).

What is Lust?

Lust is sexual desire.

Pride

Verses That Speak of Pride:

"But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble" (James 4:6).

"When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom" (Proverbs 11:2).

"One's pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor" (Proverbs 29:23).

What is Pride?

C.S Lewis, the writer of the Narnia series, said this about pride, "Pride is the complete anti-state of mind. It is the great sin that leads to all other sins because pride is the exaltation of self above all authority, even God's authority."

An example of being prideful is being a narcissist or believing you're better than everyone else.

You may give God pride, for example by saying: "God helped me do this" or "All glory to God" since this isn't giving yourself pride.

Wrath

Verses That Speak of Wrath:

"Refrain from anger and turn from wrath- do not fret—it leads only to evil" (Psalm 37:8).

"For human anger does not bring about the righteousness of God" (James 1:20).

What is Wrath?

A common answer would be anger, but this simply is incorrect. Wrath is a step above anger when actions come by anger.
