Is Colossians 3:18 Sexist?
One of the most common debates that the Bible is sexist is Colossians 3:18. So, let's debunk this! "18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord" (Colossians 3:18). This verse certainly sounds bad, but let's explain it.
Let's first look at the context of the verse. "16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not become bitter against them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord" (Colossians 3:16-20). Just by showing these verses, it should be obvious that the verse isn't being sexist. For those who still don't understand, I'll try to explain.
The verse is simply saying the role of the wife in a family. As said in Collisions 3:19, the man is the leader of the home, not the wife. A different role doesn't make the Bible sexist; you wouldn't call someone with a different job than another wrong, so why call this out? Men and females have different gifts, meaning they can do certain tasks better than the other. It's why they complement each other. Men are biologically stronger than women as women have gifts they can do better than men, this statement isn't sexist, just the truth.
