What Does Xmas Mean?
Some Christians have become angered with the usage of Xmas instead of Christmas as they misconstrued the meaning of the word, believing it to be a secular stunt to cross or x out the name of Christ. However, Xmas is entirely Christian in origin.
In the 16th century, Christians used Xmas as an abbreviation for Christmas. Why the X? Well, because Christ starts with the letter, in Greek that is. The Greek word for Christ is "Χριστός." Christians simply took the first letter from "Χριστός" and then added "mas." Mas or mass is a church service, so Christmas was shortened to Xmas.
