Do Boys Have to Be Circumcised?
What is Circumcision?
Circumcision is the act of removing foreskin, the skin around a male's you know what, at the end(the tip). There are many benefits for doing this, but this isn't a medical journal or persuasive essay so we won't be getting into that here.
Do Boys Have to Be Circumcised?
According to Leviticus 12:3, " On the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised" (Leviticus 12:3 NASB1995). However, in Galatians 5:2, " Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you," (Galatians 5:2 NASB1995). So, is there a contradiction? The first verse claims a male must be circumcised while the second seems to claim circumcision serves no benefit in reference to Christ. So, which are true?
Well, both of them were true, just at different times. Here's an analogy, a government decides to ban ash wood as an import as it brings in an invasive species. Eventually, this animal dies, as it is no longer necessary to deny ash wood as an import, and the law is removed.
The same sort of idea is true with circumcision in the Bible, we refer to this law change as the old and new covenant. Click here to read about this.
