Lilith

Who Was Lilith?

If you are a Christian who uses social media, you probably heard the name "Lilith" thrown around. So, who is she? First of all, it must be noted that nowhere in the Bible, from the old testament to new, is the name Lilith ever used(except in the NRSV, where it is used once, but I'll debunk this down there)! I ask you right now to look, trust me, you won't find anything. The legends of the person, vary, but the most common story about her consists that Lilith was made by God to please Adam. Instead of doing this, she ran away and had, intercourse with Satan... Lilith was also a demon-like monster, some myths even claim she is male and female.

Now, as mentioned earlier, the name Lilith was used once in the NRSV. "Wildcats shall meet with hyenas, goat-demons shall call to each other; there too Lilith shall repose, and find a place to rest" (Isaiah 34:14). To say the least, this translation couldn't be worse, it being the only one who translates it like this. Most other translations use words like night creature, night bird, or owl. The actual Hebrew word used was, "לִּילִ֔ית" which translates most directly to "the night creature," but when looking at the context it likely is speaking about an owl. Even if Lilith was a correct translation, there would be no reason to assume I'd be referencing to the person. When using a better translation, we read this, "The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest" (Isaiah 34:14 KJV). How would it make sense for Lilith to be here? It just would be random and wouldn't fit in the context.
