Did Jesus go to Hell?
Did Jesus go to Hell? What is The Harrowing?
When Jesus' flesh died on the cross, it is commonly debated where Jesus had went when he died; however, we do surprisingly get an answer from the Gospels. "And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise," (Luke 24:43 KJV). When Jesus was on the cross, he tells one of the thieves that on that day, they will both be in paradise. Paradise is most likely a synonym to Heaven.
It is to also be noted that an early Christian creed in fact states he had gone to Hell during his stay in the tomb. "Was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead," (Apostles' Creed, 7-9). This idea may come from 1 Peter where it says "By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison," (1 Peter 3:19 KJV). This verse is heavily debated on what it means, but some believe it may mean Jesus went to prison(Hell/Hades) and preached to them. Jesus at the very least went to Heaven, but it perhaps is possible he too went to Hell, but we really can not say.
