What Are The Five Solas?

What Are The Five Solas?

During the Protestant Reformation, the five solas were Latin phrases that highlighted the differences between the early reformers and the Roman Catholic Church. The word sola is the Latin word for “only” or “alone.” It was used for five key teachings that defined the biblical ideas of Protestants.

The Five Are:

1. Sola Scriptura: “Scripture alone.” This meaning, only scripture has power. One who rejects sola scriptura would believe something like the papacy(the pope system) and tradition also have power, not just scripture.

2. Sola Fide: “Faith alone.” This meaning, only the belief in God can save a believer. Baptism, purgatory, good works, and indulgences are all not necessary to obtain salvation according to sola fide as it is a free gift from God that any can receive(unless one believes in predestination).

3. Sola gratia: “Grace alone.” This meaning, we are only saved due to God's grace on us. Not because of good works.

4. Solo Christo/Solus Christus: “Christ alone.” This meaning that Jesus is the only mediator while deniers of this doctrine use people intercessors(people who pray on another's behalf).

5. Soli Deo Gloria: “To the glory of God alone.” This meaning, one should emphasize God and his glory throughout your life.
